Why Is the Outdoor Cabinet of My Heat Pump Making Extra Noise?

The main reason that heat pumps are popular with many homeowners is that they can work as both heating and air conditioning systems. Essentially, a heat pump is like an air conditioner that can change the direction it works so that when the temperature drops, it can easily switch over to moving heat into the house, rather than removing it.

If you’ve been using a heat pump for your home comfort this winter, you may have noticed that the outdoor cabinet is making louder noises than normal. Is this a reason to call for repair technicians to fix it?

This noise is probably nothing to worry about

If your heat pump is still producing the level of warmth you expect from it, then the answer to the above question is likely “no.” What you’re hearing is the defrost cycle kicking in periodically. As a heat pump runs during the winter, it absorbs moisture along its outdoor coil at the same time that it absorbs heat. This moisture can freeze along the coil. It’s a natural part of heat pump operation, and the system has a built-in defrost cycle to counteract it so it won’t interfere with heat exchange. Occasionally, the defrost controls will reverse the heat pump’s operation long enough for the coils to release the heat that will melt off the frost.

When you should worry about this noise

Should you notice at any time that your heat pump is losing its heating ability, resulting in cold spots around your house, then it’s time to worry about those strange outdoor noises. The defrost cycle might be malfunctioning and running continually. Or it could be a problem with the compressor, and it needs to be fixed before the unit burns out and requires a full replacement. Call for repair experts to investigate and discover what’s wrong.
